Sort of. The interior is not as pretty as Luby's and not as big, but the layout of the food and concept is similar. They have about 20+ different foods you can choose from for example, green beans, mapo tofu, etc.. As a complete aside, the one Chinese place at which I eat locally is in a shopping center with a dry cleaners, as is one of my favorites in New York. There must be something to that connection. Anyway, the place that I tried was called The Red Pepper. It is on Westheimer about a mile past the Galleria. I stopped in for lunch, after using one of my tried and true techniques for identifying good Asian restaurants -- count the Asians eating there during a busy lunch rush. Here, they were plentiful, so I gave it a shot.

It seemed like many of the patrons were regulars and knew most of the staff by name and some even ordered what looked like stuff that was not on the menu. The special on the day I visited was chicken breast, jumbo shrimp, and vegetables in a thin, brown, low fat spicy sauce. The meal came with a cup of soup (I ordered the wonton), an egg roll, and steamed rice. The cost was a little high for lunch at $10.95, but it would have definitely provided for two meals for average eaters (or eaters that are not staying in a hotel room with no fridge!).

The soup was very bland. The chicken broth was almost flavorless, and the bowl included one wonton that did not have much texture. There were a good number of vegetable chunks in the broth, but no shreds of pork, as I usually find in New York-style Chinese wonton soup.

They also had no crunchy noodles to submerge in the soup, which I thought was a minus. The entree, however, made up for the soup tenfold. This meal was flat out delicious. The chicken was moist and the shrimp were tender and tasty. The sauce had just the right amount of kick, without being overbearing. Broccoli and snow peas were the primary vegetables in the dish, and they definitely added to both the presentation and the taste.

The egg roll was more like what I call a spring roll back home. It was OK -- but, I am still seeking out the one memorable egg roll that has to be found somewhere outside of the New York area. The person who appeared to be the owner worked the register and seemed legitimately interested in everyone's dining experience. All in all, I would consider this a positive meal and I might go back there again in the future, but with the plethora of Chinese restaurants in the area, I might also be inclined to try something else, too.

Visit Houston Asian Restaurant Guide for more restaurant reviews in Houston, Texas.

Chinese Restaurant in Houston Review

Zake Japanese Cuisine

2946 S. This Chinese restaurant is located in Houston Chinatown . Xiong's Cafe is well known for its noodle, especially beef noodle soup. I had the wonton noodle soup because I wanted to try something new this time. When I first walked in, I noticed there were not a lot of seats. Big problem especially during lunch time. If you every want to know about a Chinese Restaurant in Houston, visit Houston Chinese Restaurants Guide for more details. The colored lights hanging down the ceiling is a very nice touch along with the wall accented lights. The chairs are elegant, however, the tables don't match quite as well. The owner changed the name of the restaurant to Grand Cafe Chinese Restaurant because he wants it to be fancy. I tried their veal dumplings and it has to be the best I have tasted. The freshly rolled flour surround the meat was perfect, not too thin and not to thick. The succulent taste of the veal meat was incredible. Together with the soy sauce, the (15) dumplings made it down in less than 10 minutes. Their beef noodle soup is perfect as well. Most places will put in tons of soy sauce in the soup creating too much saltiness and ruins taste. However, Beijing Noodle Cafe adds in the right amount and creates one of the best beef noodle soup in town. The restaurant carries over 50 dishes including family meals for 4, 6, or 8 people. Price is inexpensive as most dishes are under $5 for lunch and under $10 for dinner. Exceptional value and incredible food, Beijing Noodle Cafe is our newest addition to our Best of Chintatown Editor's Pick.

Visit Chinese Restaurants in Houston for more restaurant reviews.

Antony's House Chinese Restaurant
4645 Highway 6, Suite W
Sugar Land, TX 77478
Tele: 281-491-0098
(Located next to East Cafe Buffet)

The Scene
Antony's House is a trendy Chinese restaurant. Sichuan provides a variety of authentic Sichuan (a province in China meaning “four rivers”) style food, from snacks and appetizers to a full-course meal. I highly recommend the House Special Crispy Chicken; the quantity is great and the spicy taste combined with the crispy chicken only makes you ask for more. I have always heard about the famous “steam corn bun” Wo-Wo-Tou, but never really have the chance to taste it until I had them in Sichuan. I highly recommend the House Special Crispy Chicken. The quantity is enormous and the spicy taste combined with the crispy chicken makes you ask for more. I have always heard about the famous “steam corn bun” (Wo-Wo-Tou), but never really have the chance to taste it until I had here. These steam corn bun may look like regular buns at first glance, but when you actually eat them, it gives you a totally different taste from their counterparts. Dragon Wontons is also something special. These wontons have more stuffing's and is wrapped in tender wrappings which is then dipped in the red spicy oil. It is a good snack and appetizer to start your meal.

Best of Chinatown Rating: 5.0 (scale of 1-5, 5 being excellent)

-Reviewed By Cindy
For those who love hot and spicy delicacies, Sichuan Cuisine Chinese Restaurant is a great place to go. Nippon offers quality Japanese food at a fair price range and the regular lunch menu is about 7 dollars. Most of the lunch dishes comes with miso soup and Japanese style salad. Their katsu-don (fried pork rice) is one of the best lunch deals. Katsu-don comes in a traditional Japanese lunch box, which contains one large piece of fried pork chop and rice. On top of the pork chop, the delicious sweeten soy bean sauce is poured on top of the rice and the port chop. This meal also comes with one bowl of miso soup and one dish of Japanese salad. The salad is a great appetizer, with the Japanese style dressing (which taste a bit like the regular range dressing but a bit more sweet) it has became my one of my long time favor. Overall , I find Nippon is a great place to visit and eat. You can read more at Houston Chinese Restaurant Guide. The interior is authentic and filled with towering ceilings, detailed crown molding, majestic mahogany windows with rich tapestry drapes and an exotic collection of Asian artifacts. A grand piano by the front door completes this beautifully orchestrated design interior. The restaurant is clean and spacious; A perfect environment to take a date or loved one.The Food:Qin Dynasty's great service and Hunan cuisine measures up to the impressive decor. Soulful sauces are made with premium ingredients and devoid of sugar and oily goop. Begin with deftly prepared hot and sour soup or distinctive steamed dumplings bathing in a pool of aromatic Szechuan sauce. Segue into the red-hot shredded pork and bamboo sprout entree or the tamer, tender kung pao chicken, abundant with cashews. The yu shiang shrimp with just-picked snow peas, asparagus tips, pungent ginger and fresh jalapeños teeters on the edge of perfection.Heads Up:The art of Chinese cooking has been developed and refined over many dynasties. However cooking could not be considered an art until the great classical age of China 122-249 B.C., roughly the period of Qin Dynasty. The two dominant philosophies of this period were Confucianism and Taoism. Each influenced the course of Chinese history and the development of the culinary arts. Confucianism concerned itself with the art of cooking and placed great emphasis on the enjoyment of life. Confucius taught that good cooking depends on the harmonious blend of ingredients rather than the taste of the individual elements. Confucianism also stressed the use of color and texture in the presentation of dishes. Taoism was responsible for the development of the hygienic aspects of foods and cooking. In contrast to confusianists, Taoists were concerned with the live-giving attributes of various foods. Under Tao's influence, the Chinese have explored the world of plants, roots, herbs, fungus, and seeds over the dynasties. They discovered many beneficial food ingredients that are incorporated into the everyday Chinese cooking. At Qin Dynasty, "we combined these philosophies and apply them to our cooking. We emphasize "flavor, aroma, and taste".
